Roof racks are often used to carry expensive equipment, and here’s how you can make it less likely that yours will get stolen.

Protecting your roof rack

It’s more common for thieves to target gear stored on top of your car rather than the rack itself. That being said, expensive, specialized and high-quality roof racks can sometimes be stolen. The best thing to do to prevent this from happening is to make sure your roof rack is installed as soundly as possible and purchase locks if available.

Protecting your cargo

Most cargo boxes come with locks. If you’re on the market for a new one, it’s a good idea to look for a model equipped with a robust locking mechanism. That said, it’s an even better idea to purchase additional security accessories such as cut-resistant locking straps. These wrap around your cargo box and prevent it from being opened.

Cargo bags are another popular roof storage option, but they offer limited security. While their zipper pulls can be secured with a padlock, most of them can simply be cut open.

Finally, there’s little point to marking or painting your cargo box or bag to identify them as yours. Thieves are unlikely to remove them from the rack as opening them is much easier.

Protecting your gear

If you’re carrying bikes, kayaks, skis or a canoe, you’ll want to invest in locking straps to make sure your gear isn’t stolen while you’re not looking. Try to avoid leaving your car unattended for long periods of time, and if possible, make sure there’s always someone keeping an eye on it. This also applies to towing carriers.
