TOP 4 SPOTS TO GO ICE FISHING IN ONTARIO

Ontario has some of the best ice fishing in North America. Here are four destinations that are worth visiting, whether you’re a seasoned angler or have only recently discovered this winter pastime.

  1. Lake Simcoe
Dubbed the ice fishing capital of Canada, Lake Simcoe is located just an hour and half north of Toronto. There are thousands of huts available to rent, and with its grand expanse of 744 km², there’s plenty of space for your own hut. Surrounded by villages, there are many points of entry to the lake. Those coming from Toronto may find Sibbald Point the most convenient.

Lake Simcoe is stocked with whitefish, yellow perch, pike and muskellunge, but is most famous for its trout fishing.

  2. Lake Nipissing
Another sizeable Ontario lake with a lively ice fishing scene is Lake Nipissing. Located beside North Bay and about 3.5 hours north of Toronto, this destination offers some of the best ice fishing in the province. Visitors have the option of renting an ice bungalow, which includes bunk beds, propane furnaces, lights, barbecues and washrooms.

Lake Nipissing is stocked with walleye, pike, perch and whitefish.

  3. Bay of Quinte
Located off Highway 401 and only a couple hours east of Toronto lies the Bay of Quinte, the so-called walleye capital of the world. In winter, there are a variety of great entry points for ice fishing, including Trenton Bay, Belleville Bay, Hay Bay and Telegraph Narrows. And there are a number of outfitters offering ice hut rentals as well.

The Bay of Quinte has lots of pike as well as largemouth and smallmouth bass. However, it’s most famous for its massive trophy walleye.

  4. Windy Lake Provincial Park
If you’re looking for a family-friendly winter getaway, Windy Lake is a great option. In addition to being an ice-fishing hotspot, it’s a great place for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. The park has yurts and newly built lakeside cabins available for rent. And if you don’t have your own equipment, the Park Office can set you up with all the fishing gear you need.

Windy Lake Provincial Park is located just outside Sudbury, and the lake is known for its flavoursome whitefish and trout
