Here’s an overview of each option.

Drop-in liner

A drop-in liner is essentially a rigid plastic shell designed to fit the contours of your truck bed. You can easily install the liner yourself by securing it beneath the truck rails. It’s also simple to remove and replace as needed.

Since the liner sits on top of your truck bed, it protects against scratches and dents. Alternatively, it’s a good option if you want to conceal any existing damage. The slick plastic also makes it easy to slide cargo in and out of the truck. Plus, a drop-in liner is considerably less expensive than the spray-on alternative.

The main disadvantage of drop-in liners is that water and dirt can get trapped between the truck bed and shell and cause the truck bed to rust. They also tend to crack and loosen over time, especially if you opt for a universal size rather than a liner specifically designed for your type of vehicle. Additionally, the smooth surface that makes loading and unloading a breeze also means cargo is more likely to shift during transportation.

Spray-on liner

A spray-on liner is a polyurethane coating that adheres to the truck bed. This makes it a permanent solution that doesn’t need to be replaced. However, the bed must be sanded down and thoroughly cleaned beforehand to ensure the liner sticks.

Compared to drop-in liners, a spray-on coating is a very durable option. It doesn’t shift or break, and water can’t get trapped between the truck bed and liner. You also don’t have to worry about cargo sliding around. Plus, you have the option to spray the inside of the tailgate as well.

Unfortunately, spray-on liners can be quite costly. The colour can also fade over time, unless you opt for a product with UV protection. Additionally, the installation process is extensive and best left to an experienced professional, which adds to the expense.
