7 tips for towing your trailer this winter

If you use your camper or trailer in winter, you know the unique challenges of towing in the cold season. To move your fifth wheel on winter roads or haul your snowmobile or ATV to snowy trails, you need to know how to avoid the hazards. Here are seven tips for safe winter towing.

1. Equip your truck. Ensure your vehicle has the proper towing equipment. Avoid bolt-on friction sway control products, as they can make it more difficult to control your unit on icy roads. Ensure you have the proper weight distribution equipment, plus air suspension springs. An air suspension provides a smooth ride and better control.

If you have a diesel truck, consider installing exhaust brakes, which use pressure from the engine exhaust to apply pressure to the brakes. Exhaust brakes are easier on your braking system and provide gentler braking, which reduces trailer sway.

2. Take a test drive. Knowing how your truck will behave in winter conditions on busy highways is essential. Set up your rig and take a test drive on unpopulated roads to learn how the truck acts when braking, accelerating and turning.

3. Maintain your rig. Before your journey, inspect the tires, brakes and suspension and check the steering fluid. Regularly scheduled maintenance can help you eliminate minor problems before they become costly repairs.

4. Prepare an emergency kit. Every vehicle should have a winter emergency supply kit. Include blankets, non-perishable food, water, jumper and towing cables, first aid supplies and extra mitts and tuque.

5. Drive according to conditions. Legal speed limits are based on perfect driving conditions. When it’s snowing or icy, you may have to go at speeds below the limit to maintain control. It takes longer to brake with a full load on slippery roads, so keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you and give yourself extra time and space to stop. If other drivers get impatient, let them pass you.

6. Don’t overload. Your truck and trailer have maximum loads they can handle in good conditions. Know these limits and don’t overload, as this can make it treacherous to climb hills and control your rig on sharp turns.

7. Check the forecast. If the weather forecast calls for stormy conditions, your best strategy is to delay your travels until the weather improves.
