How to Properly Install Your Bike Rack

No matter what time of year it is, it’s always a good time for a weekend getaway to do some biking. To make sure you have all the space and equipment you’ll need, though, most people choose to attach a bike rack to their car or truck. We at Hitch City in the Greater Toronto Area fully support any effort to go on a biking trip. Here are a few tips on how to properly install your bike rack so you can enjoy biking safely.

Read the instructions

Seriously, it’s really important to read all of the instructions. And that doesn’t just go for the bike rack, but also the bike itself and the car you’re attaching the rack to. Not all racks are compatible with all cars and not all bikes are compatible with all racks. To know which bike rack is right for you, you’ll need some information about your car or truck. What is its towing capacity? If you want a roof rack, how much weight can your car support? There are a lot of questions that can help determine how to proceed so be sure you’re prepared before you even step into the shop to find your bike rack.

What’s the strongest point?

Once you’ve read all the instructions, consulted your friendly neighbourhood bike rack experts at Hitch City, and found the rack that’s right for you, all you have to do is attach it. Every rack is different, but all racks that aren’t a part of the original structure of your vehicle will involve securing the rack to the existing structure in some way, typically using straps. You want to be sure to anchor your rack at the strongest point of the car’s body so nothing will break away. Once the rack is properly attached, it shouldn’t be able to move at all in any direction.

What about the bike?

Having your rack firmly secured to your car is really only half the battle. Even if your rack is secure, you have to take the same care attaching your bike to the rack to ensure the safety of you, your passengers, and your bike. Make sure all the straps that are recommended in the bike rack directions are firmly secured. Be sure, also, that your bikes are protected with padding so they aren’t damaged by debris during transportation.
