8 Quick and Easy Maintenance Tips for Snow Plows in Toronto

Year after year, snow plows in Toronto have their work cut out for them. And it’s a pretty safe bet that we’ll get quite a bit of snow again this year. That’s why it’s important to make sure that your snow equipment is up to the challenge. Keep reading for seven quick and easy maintenance tips that’ll help you get ready for the season ahead.

  1. Review your manual

Take another look at your owner’s manual to make sure that you’re on the right track as far as usage, maintenance and fluids are concerned. Owner’s manuals are full of tips and recommendations that can help maximize the life of your equipment.

  1. Visual inspection

Do a quick visual inspection before each use to ensure that there are no signs of damage to the A-frame, blade, lift frame and mounting kit. You want to make sure that your plow is safe for use and that there is no damage that needs attention.

  1. Top up your fluids

Monitor your fluids regularly and top them up whenever you need to keep your snow equipment in good shape.

  1. Tighten bolts

As part of your regular maintenance routine, you’ll want to verify that your fasteners, trip springs and eye bolts are properly adjusted and securely fastened.

  1. Check your hydraulic system

Monitor your hydraulic fluids on a regular basis and check the hoses for cracks and leaks. A cracked or blown hose can result in power angling failure and leave your plow dead in the water. And that’s the last thing you want when you’re knee deep in snow.

  1. Apply ample lubrication

Grease all moving parts on a regular basis to keep your snow plow in good condition throughout the season.

  1. Check your electrical connections

Watch out for loose connections or signs of damage, corrosion or melted wiring. You can use dielectric grease to help protect electrical wiring and connections from rust and corrosion.

  1. Change the blade

Depending on how much use they get, plow blades can wear down fairly quickly. Check the condition of your blade before the first use of the season and then periodically throughout the winter months to make sure it’s in proper working condition.
