7 Tips to Get Your Snow Blower Ready for Winter in Toronto

Toronto’s gearing up for another winter with plenty of snowfall. But don’t wait until you’re waist-deep in the white stuff to fire up your snow blower. Save yourself a headache by taking care of any repairs before the winter weather really sets in. Keep reading for seven snow equipment repair tips that’ll get you ready for the season ahead.

  1. Read the manual

It may not be the most exciting bit of writing you’ll read all year but your owner’s manual is chocked full of excellent tips on how to use your snow blower properly as well as recommendations for keeping it in tip-top shape for years to come.

  1. Give it a wash

Chances are that if your machinery has been sitting in storage for three seasons, it’s probably a little dusty. Take a minute to wipe down your gear to remove all dust, dirt and debris that may have accumulated while it wasn’t in use.

  1. Add some lubricant

After washing any dust and dirt off of your snow blower, you’ll want to add some lubricant to all moving parts. At the same time, you can tighten up any visible fasteners to prevent problems down the road.

  1. Change the oil

Adding fresh engine oil will help ensure that your snow blower gives you optimum performance all season long. Just be sure to drain out last year’s oil first.

  1. Fuel it up

If there’s any leftover gas still in the tank from last year, drain it off and add fresh fuel. But remember that fuel goes stale quickly so don’t add any if you’re more than 30 days away from the first snowfall of the season. Check your owner’s manual to make sure that you’re following the manufacturer’s recommendations.

  1. Shelter it

Always store snow removal equipment in a clean, dry place to minimize the risk of rust and corrosion. The ideal storage spot is somewhere that is protected from the weather but still easy to access, like a garage. And remember to keep heavy machinery out of reach of children.
