A Beginner's Guide to Lawn Edging

Lawn edging makes a huge impact on your lawn. You might already have a lush, weed-free, perfectly manicured lawn, but only a well-edged yard can provide that above and beyond level of aesthetic perfection. In addition, lawn edging also helps prevent grass from taking over your flowerbeds, walkways and driveways. Fortunately, perfect lawn edging is within anybody’s grasp. Let’s take a look at the ABCs of lawn edging:

Equipment Needed

The equipment you decide to buy will depend on your budget and the size of your yard. A manual edging tool may be sufficient if you have a smaller yard. For anything larger, you probably want to invest in a powered unit. There are many great corded and battery-powered edging tools available that will do the trick for most urban yards, and gas-powered units are also available for larger properties. Talk to your local lawnmower and landscaping equipment dealer in Toronto for advice—some string trimmers, for example, can be adapted to become edgers, and some battery-powered edging machines can share batteries with other garden tools. Regardless of your needs, there’s a perfect, affordable edging tool out there for you. Your favourite lawnmower and landscaping equipment retailer in Toronto can help.

Dress the Part!

When you edge with a power tool, dirt and debris are going to fly! Wear boots, eye protection, gloves and long pants.

Mark the Line

If the edging lines are obvious—along walkways, for example—you won’t have to do this. But for borders that are less defined and/or curved like lawns along garden beds that have never been edged, lay a garden hose or rope on the grass as a guide. Make sure not to put it too close—use it as a visual guide and keep it a few centimetres away from the actual cut.

The Cut

Slow and easy does it. Steady yourself and keep your arms as stable and close to your body as possible. For straight lines, start at one end and work towards the other. For curves, start in the middle and work one way, then the other. You don’t have to go deeper than five centimetres in most instances, but if your flower beds are sunken, you may have to deepen cuts to 10 to 15 centimetres.
