4 SIGNS YOU SHOULD REPAIR YOUR TRAILER

A trailer can be an asset for your business or family’s transportation needs. However, as is the case with any vehicle, over time will parts wear out and need to be fixed, and it’s important to understand that a trailer in need of repair is dangerous to you and others on the road. So how do you know if your trailer needs a professional inspection? Here are some signs:

1. You have difficulty stopping

If your trailer has a braking system and you’re having trouble slowing down or stopping, then it’s time to give it a check. Driving with faulty brakes can have grave implications on the the road.

To check the brakes yourself, lift your trailer (while attached to your towing vehicle) with a jack until the tires are off the ground. Apply the brakes. Then try to spin the wheels. They should be locked tight. If you can spin the tires, then you should get your trailer’s brakes professionally checked.

2. You have difficulty turning

If you’re having trouble turning or manoeuvring while towing, your axle could need repair. A bent or broken axle is a common problem in trailers and can give you a lot of trouble, from difficulties turning to problems with braking.

Look under the trailer and make sure your axle isn’t bent or broken, as this will call for immediate repairs.

Also, check your axle for grease leaks. Self-greasing axles have a small reservoir to catch excess grease called the boot. A broken boot will mean there is grease everywhere and you’ll need to get it fixed.

3. There’s uneven wear on your tires

If your trailer is making your vehicle pull to one side, then your tires may be to blame. Bulging or worn tires are a common problem on trailers.

Before towing, always look for uneven wear, bulges and cracks on your tires. Get these problems addressed as soon as possible. Also, make sure the tires always have the correct air pressure to keep them in good shape.

4. Your lights aren’t working

Lights are an important trailer safety feature, and if they aren’t working properly, you really shouldn’t be towing. Electrical problems can be due to something as simple as a blown fuse or a poor wiring connection that you can fix yourself. However, they can also be more serious and require professional expertise to fix.
