SINGLE-STAGE VS. TWO-STAGE: WHICH SNOWBLOWER IS BEST FOR YOU

The first question to answer when purchasing a new snowblower is do you need a single-stage or a two-stage model? Knowing the difference between them will help you choose the snowblower that’s most suited to your needs.

Single-stage snow blowers

single-stage snowblower contains a single auger. This is the large corkscrew piece that picks up snow from the ground and throws it out the chute.

The auger is made of (or coated with) rubber and makes contact with the ground, making it perfect for cleaning driveways and sidewalks. However, they won’t work well on gravel or uneven surfaces.

Single-stage blowers have less power than two-stage models and can throw snow only about one metre. They work well to a maximum snow depth of approximately 20 centimetres.

Single-stage models are best for small to medium properties with paved driveways and sidewalks, and they’re best for clearing light to moderate snowfall. Consequently, they don’t have enough power to tackle heavy, wet snowfalls or large properties.

Two-stage snowblowers

two-stage snow blower consists of an auger plus an impeller. The auger directs the snow to the middle of the machine, whereas the impeller catches it and throws it through the chute. This dual machinery allows a two-stage model to throw snow farther than a single-stage model — more than 1.5 metres.

Because the auger is made of metal and doesn’t touch the ground, this type of snow blower is better for gravel and uneven surfaces. However, a few centimetres of snow will always remain behind that you’ll need to shovel or treat with de-icing salts.

Two-stage snowblowers have more power than single-stage ones. Therefore, they can clear a wider surface — up to 75 centimetres per pass — and clear heavy snowfalls of up to 60 centimetres.

Two-stage models are typically self-propelled, so the operator only steers the machine and don’t have to push it, making them better for large properties with steep inclines. Additional features of two-stage snowblowers are heated grips, headlights and electric starters.

The additional power and added features of two-stage snowblowers make them considerably more expensive than single-stage ones.
