How to choose the best cargo carrier

A cargo carrier is a great accessory to increase the storage of your car or SUV. There are many different models, sizes and configurations to choose from. So, what cargo carrier is the best for your vehicle? Here are some tips to keep in mind when shopping for a new cargo carrier.

Consider your needs

Cargo carriers are great for stowing camping gear and equipment for outdoor activities like snowboards and beach gear. They’re also perfect for hauling turf tools, backpacks and strollers. Generally, cargo carriers are well-suited for large, bulky, but lightweight items like tents, camping chairs, pillows and skis. However, most cargo carriers have a maximum weight capacity of 70 or 75 kilograms. Therefore, you should always stow heavy items like large water bottles or full coolers inside your vehicle.

Determine your vehicle’s weight capacity

Verify your car roof’s weight limit. You can find this number in the user manual. If you want to find out how much you can stow in your cargo carrier, subtract the weight of the carrier and any other rack accessories you have on your roof, including crossbars and feet, from the vehicle’s weight limit.

For example, if your car’s weight limit is 75 kilograms, and the combined weight of your carrier and accessories is 30 kilograms, you can safely carry to 45 kilograms of gear in your carrier.

Check the carrier’s dimensions

Standard cargo carriers are typically about 183 centimetres long. If you plan to carry items like cross-country skis or a surfboard, you should consider a longer box. If you have a bike or kayak carrier on your roof, ensure the width of your box is narrow enough to accommodate them.

Additionally, be mindful about the height of the box. Make sure you can still park in your garage, enter parking garages and go through drive-thru restaurants.

Know your hatch clearance

You must take extra measures if you have a hatchback or an SUV with a rear door that opens upward. If you install a cargo carrier that’s too long, it may prevent you from opening your rear door. Therefore, measure your vehicle’s hatch clearance — the distance from the front crossbar to the open hatch at crossbar level. Compare the measurement to the carrier specs to determine if it will fit.
