IS A TRUCK CAP OR COVER BEST FOR YOU?

There are a lot of advantages to having a cover for your truck. It can keep your bed clean, prevent damage due to weather and even allow you to store tools and supplies without the risk of them being stolen. Wondering whether a cap or a cover is the right choice for you? Here’s what you need to know about these two options.

Truck cap

Typically made of aluminum or fibreglass, most truck caps have windows and rear doors that open. They’re available in different heights and sizes and can be tailored to suit your needs. Trucks with caps have a stylish, SUV-type profile.

Also known as camper shells, truck caps are popular with hunting, fishing and camping enthusiasts. This is because the shell can be outfitted with camping gear and even serve as an alternative to a tent when camping.

Many contractors also prefer to have a truck cap because they provide more protected space than a cover. Furthermore, the area can be divided to allow specialized tool and material organization. However, because a cap isn’t easily removed, it’s less than ideal for hauling large or oddly sized material.

Truck caps are well-sealed against the elements, meaning that whatever gear is in the bed stays dry and protected even in the rain.

Bed cover

Also known as a tonneau cover, a bed cover preserves the truck’s signature pickup look because it lays flat against the top of the box. They’re lightweight, convenient and can be easily installed or removed by one person, making them especially practical when carrying oversized loads. They’re often water-resistant, but don’t offer the same weather protection as a cap.

Bed covers can be made of both soft and hard materials. Soft covers are typically less expensive but may wear out more quickly than other options. Hard versions are long-lasting but have fewer style options.

There are different types of cover available, including roll-up, folding and retractable models. Some, such as retractable covers, offer more security than others, as they can be locked into the framework of the truck. Alternatively, one-piece fibreglass covers blend seamlessly into your truck. They’re more secure and durable than other covers, but more difficult to remove, limiting the size and shape of your cargo’s towing hitch.
