6 PRO STRATEGIES FOR WATERING YOUR LAWN

Grass is naturally designed to capture rain. However, proper lawn maintenance makes your grass stronger, while improper techniques and over watering can cause more harm than good. Here’s some advice for effectively watering your lawn.

1. Apply the right amount of water

Most lawns require approximately one inch of water per week. This amount can come from rain or from watering your lawn. For best results, place a measuring cup under your sprinkler and note the time it takes to collect one inch of water. This is the period you should run your sprinkler for during the week.

2. Water in the morning

The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning when it’s cooler outside and the water can soak into the soil and be fully absorbed by the roots. Running your sprinkler at night is one of the worst things you can do since the water will not evaporate completely. Persistently wet grass increases the chance of fungal growth and disease.

3. Water more near trees

Trees require a lot of water and will pull moisture away from the surrounding soil. The grass around trees will often be the first to show signs of browning. Increase the frequency of watering in these areas.

4. Water more during hot periods

It’s not uncommon for southern Ontario to have one or more heat waves during the summer. If it’s hot and dry outside, increase the frequency of watering your lawn to every four or five days.

5. Allow time to pass between waterings

Over watering your lawn can encourage diseases to fester and weeds to grow. For this reason, you should allow the surface of your lawn to dry out before watering it again. You can also wait until you notice that your footprints don’t bounce back or that your grass is taking on a greyish, blue colour. These are signs that it’s time to water your lawn.

6. Raise your lawn mower height

Set your mower blade higher to improve the health of your lawn. Grass that’s cut too short will brown earlier and become dry and straw-like. Keeping it approximately three inches tall will help it to grow thicker and stronger.
