LAWN MOWER MAINTENANCE TIPS

Regularly mowing your lawn is the key to keeping it healthy and thriving. However, like most machines, lawn mowers require ongoing maintenance and care to run efficiently. Indeed, routine upkeep can extend the life of your machine and save you money in the long run. Here are some tips to help you maintain your lawn mower:

• Replace the fuel each year. Empty last season’s gasoline and fill up your tank with new fuel. It’s also a good idea to use a fuel stabilizer to keep your gasoline from going stale.

• Change the oil at the beginning of the season and check the oil level regularly. Running your mower with low oil levels can reduce the life of its engine.

• Clean your lawn mower after each use. Once it’s cooled down, remove any debris on the underside of the mower. Spray it with a hose to loosen grass and dirt. Dry it thoroughly before storing it.

• Keep the blades sharp for a clean cut. Dull blades can shred the tips of your grass and make them turn brown. Inspect your blades regularly. If they’re dull, you can either replace or sharpen them. Your local lawn care store can sharpen and balance the blades for you.

• Replace the air filter as needed. Check it often and clean or change this component when it gets dirty.

• Change the spark plug every year or two. Disconnect it and check to see if it’s black, corroded or damaged. Replacing your spark plug will help you get a faster, better start.

• Prepare your lawn mower for storage before the beginning of winter. Drain all the fluids and then start your mower and leave it running to burn as much of the remaining gas as possible. If your mower has a battery, remove it and bring it indoors for the winter. If possible, you should also store your lawn mower indoors. Otherwise, choose a dry, protected location like a shed.

Lastly, remember to turn your lawn mower off and disconnect the spark plug any time you want to work on it.
