4 benefits of installing a bulkhead in your cargo vehicle

Your vehicle fleet is one of your business’s biggest assets. Therefore, keeping your vans and trucks organized, functional and safe for your employees can improve efficiency and boost your bottom line. That’s why you should consider outfitting your cargo vehicles with bulkheads. Bulkheads are often overlooked in commercial vehicle upfitting, but are essential to any fleet manager looking to improve the performance of their mobile operations. Here’s why.

What’s a bulkhead?

A commercial van bulkhead is a partition that separates the cab from the rest of the vehicle. It‘s typically made of steel, perforated steel or steel wire. A bulkhead’s primary job is to prevent heavy tools and equipment from entering the cab and injuring someone if there’s a crash or sudden movement.

Why is a bulkhead important?

There are several benefits to installing bulkheads on your commercial fleet, including:

1. Increased safety.

Sudden braking, sharp turns and crashes can cause the tools stored in the back of a commercial van to become deadly projectiles. A bulkhead prevents these items from flying into the cab and harming the occupants.

2. Increased efficiency.

Bulkheads increase efficiency by better organizing your van. You can easily keep tools where they need to be. You can also mount accessories to the rear of your bulkhead so you can hang or lock away items for added storage space.

3. Improved climate control.

By separating the cab from the rest of the van, you reduce the amount of space that must be heated or air-conditioned. Bulkheads also help reduce drafts from the back of the van, improving comfort for the occupants sitting in the front.

4. Reduced noise.

Heavy equipment, tools and other objects often rattle around in the back of the van during transport. Consequently, a bulkhead reduces the amount of noise that travels to the cab. A quieter ride means your workers can focus on the road and communicate more effectively while travelling.

Bulkhead features

Bulkheads come in many materials and models. Some features include:

Accessibility. Many bulkheads come with locking doors that allow you to pass items between the front and rear of the vehicle.

Visibility. Some bulkheads are made of solid steel, while others have wire or perforated metal so that you can see what’s going on in the rear.

Extra space. Many modern bulkheads have innovative designs that give the driver several centimetres of extra legroom.
