Choosing a step bar or running board for your truck

Running boards and step bars are practical exterior truck accessories that make getting in and out of your truck or SUV easier. Whether a running board or step bar is better for your needs depends on your vehicle and how you use it. Here’s what you need to know about this helpful truck accessory.

Running boards

A running board has a flat rectangular shape and typically runs the length of the vehicle’s cabin. It can be mounted closer to the truck than a step bar and offers better protection and ground clearance. A running board provides a stepping surface along its entire length, making them more versatile than step bars, especially when loading items onto the roof.

Running boards offer these additional benefits:

• A boot-wiping surface on the board helps keep your truck’s interior clean.

• They come in various design options, including grated metal or with plastic or metal tread sheets. You can also get boards equipped with under-mounted lighting.

• They’re easy to install.

• They protect your vehicle better than step bars.

• They give your truck a rugged, beefed-up appearance.

• Some models are retractable.

Running boards are generally more effective than step bars at helping shorter passengers or children into and out of the vehicle.

Step bars

A step bar, also known as a nerf bar, is typically a single long tube made of aluminum or steel. They can either run the length of the truck cab or just the length of the door. The bars have flat step areas equipped with traction pads and can handle as much as 227 kilograms. Step bars protrude a bit further out than running boards, which makes them easier to use but more vulnerable to damage.

Step bars have the following advantages over running boards:

• You can mount them lower to the ground for easier access

• They give your vehicle a sleek, streamlined appearance

• They offer improved side protection for your vehicle

• The round shape prevents the buildup of ice and snow

If you choose a step bar for your truck, consider an oval-shaped model, as these are generally wider and offer a broader stepping surface.
