5 ROOF RACK SAFETY TIPS

A roof or sports rack is a framework that can be attached to the roof of a vehicle to carry luggage and various types of equipment. Though they’re useful it’s the driver’s responsibility to ensure that anything attached to their roof rack is completely secure. Improperly fastened items are responsible for thousands of car crashes each year. Before you hit the road, make sure you follow these five safety tips.

1. Select the right rack

Make sure to select a roof rack that’s been tested and proven to meet safety standards. You’ll also want to ensure that it fits your vehicle correctly. The attachment points should line up with the shape of your car’s roof. If you’re not sure which rack is right for you, speak to an expert before making a purchase.

2. Secure your items properly

Your roof rack will come with installation instructions as well as tips for how to properly secure various items. Be careful with very light or heavy loads. Light items can be lifted by the airstream passing over your car when you drive at high speeds. Check the weight limits for both your roof rack and your vehicle. Exceeding them can damage your car and cause an accident. In fact, heavier items like mattresses can rip your roof rack right off. They should be tied to the vehicle as well as the rack to prevent this from happening.

3. Know your height clearance

Look out for parking garages, bridges and trees. Measure the height of your car with the load you’ve added to it. If you’re carrying bicycles or other tall items, be sure to follow “low overhang” signs.

4. Balance your load.

An unbalanced roof rack raises your car’s centre of gravity. This can cause your vehicle to sway or your load to shift. Pack a stable load and balance it properly so that you maintain your vehicle’s centre of gravity. If it’s too high, your vehicle is more likely to roll over.

5. Maintain full visibility

Make sure that your roof rack, luggage and equipment don’t interfere with your ability to clearly see the road and use your mirrors.
