HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SNOWPLOW

Using a snowplow on your pickup truck is an efficient method to get snow out of the way fast, whether you’re clearing a commercial parking lot or your personal driveway. If a snowplow is one of the truck accessories on your shopping list, being familiar with the different plows on the market can help you decide which one to buy. Here are the different types of snowplows and their uses.

Straight blade

These plows do well at efficiently clearing large lots with few obstacles. If you’re inexperienced at operating snowplows, a straight-blade is a simple tool to use, as it only has up-down and left-right controls.

A straight blade snowplow is generally less expensive than other types. They’re perfect for simple clearing jobs in areas that don’t see much snowfall.

V-plow

These snowplows were designed in the 1980s and have become the most popular type made and sold. The design makes it useful for all types of snow, from heavy slush to deeply-packed drifts.

You can easily maneuver a V-plow through parking lots with obstacles or narrow lanes. The plow has multiple position points through the centre so you can adjust it to suit your needs. V-plows are, however, the most expensive option available.

Winged blade

Winged blades come with various options, including fixed wings, detachable wing kits and expandable wing plows. Wing blades allow you to cover more area in one pass and they minimize the snow windrows left behind.

Wing blades are more complex than straight ones because the blade can be much wider than your truck. However, they give you the option of plowing broad or narrow areas with a quick switch. Be careful using wing blades, however, as they can put your vehicle outside of legal width limits.

Rear-mounted

Rear-mounted plows can increase your efficiency by reducing the number of times you need to turn your vehicle around. They also improve your visibility.

Rear-mounted blades are best suited for residential driveways because you can back into the lane and pull the snow out to the road. Rear-mounted plows are more challenging to manoeuvre than most front-mounted plows.
